Your washing machine is convenient.
But that doesn't mean every piece in your closet belongs inside it.
From using too much detergent to ignoring care labels, some of the most common laundry habits can slowly damage the clothes you actually want to keep.
JULIETTE founder Rechelle Balanzat knows that good garment care isn't just about getting clothes clean. It's about keeping them looking good for as long as possible.
Here are seven mistakes to avoid.
1. Washing Everything After One Wear
Not every garment needs a full wash after every single wear.
Overwashing can contribute to fading, stretching, pilling, and general wear.
If something isn't stained, sweaty, or carrying an odor, consider airing it out instead.
2. Ignoring the Care Label
That little label inside your clothing can save you from a very expensive mistake.
Dry clean only means dry clean only.
Hand wash means hand wash.
And if something says not to tumble dry, don't assume the lowest setting will be fine.
3. Using Too Much Detergent
More detergent doesn't necessarily mean cleaner clothes.
Too much can leave residue behind and may require additional rinsing.
Follow the detergent instructions and use the appropriate amount for the load.
4. Washing Delicates With Everything Else
Your silk blouse and your heavy towels don't need the same treatment.
Different fabrics have different needs.
Separate delicate pieces when the care label allows washing, and be especially careful with items that can snag, stretch, or lose their shape.
5. Putting the Wrong Things in the Dryer
Heat is one of the easiest ways to damage clothing.
Certain fabrics can shrink. Others can lose their shape, become rough, or fade.
If a garment isn't meant for the dryer, don't put it there.
And when you're unsure, check the label.
6. Scrubbing Stains Too Aggressively
A stain is frustrating.
But attacking it with everything under your sink can make matters worse.
Aggressive rubbing can spread a stain, damage fibers, or affect the color of the garment.
For delicate or valuable pieces, it's often better to get professional help than experiment.
7. Waiting Too Long to Deal With a Problem
A small stain is much easier to deal with before it becomes a permanent part of the garment.
The same goes for loose buttons, small tears, odors, and other issues.
Pay attention to your clothes.
The earlier you address a problem, the more options you may have.
At JULIETTE, garment care is about more than making something look clean.
It's about understanding the fabric, the construction, and the garment itself.
That mindset is particularly important when you're dealing with pieces you love, pieces you've invested in, or pieces you want to keep for years.
Your wardrobe doesn't need more complicated rules.
It needs better care.
